Bangladesh has urged India to send back former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, foreign adviser Touhid Hossain said on Monday.
“We have sent a note verbal to the Indian government to send the former prime minister back to Bangladesh in this regard,” the adviser said, adding that the government wants her presence for a judicial trial here.
Earlier, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said his ministry sent letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, asking it to facilitate the return of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India.
He was talking to the reporters after an event marking Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Day at Dhaka’s Pilkhana on Monday.
“We have sent a letter to the foreign ministry regarding her extradition. The process is currently underway,” he said.
The adviser also said an extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India already existed and the former prime minister, who fled to India, could be brought back to Bangladesh under the treaty.
