At least three rickshaw passengers, including a child, have died in a road accident after they were hit by a lorry in Savar’s Ashulia.
Another person has been injured in the accident, which occurred around 9:45pm on Sunday in Ashulia’s Bypile area on the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway, according to Saleh Ahmed, chief of Savar Highway Police Station.
Police have yet to identify the victims, reports bdnews24.com.
Citing witnesses, OC Saleh said: “A rickshaw was going the wrong way down the Nabinagar-Chandra Highway from Bypile to the DEPZ when it hit a pothole filled with water and overturned.”
“One of the rickshaw passengers died on the spot when a lorry ran them over.”
Mainul Islam, an owner of a shop near the accident scene, said: “I was in my shop when the accident occurred. I heard a lot of screaming and went to see what happened. I saw a rickshaw had overturned and one person had died.”
“Three others injured in the accident were taken to the Gonoshasthya Kendra Hospital in Ashulia, where a woman and a child died.”
Saleh said that one person was still receiving care at the hospitals. Locals attempted to block the road in protest immediately after the incident took place. Later, they were persuaded to clear the road.
Police seized the lorry that was involved in the accident, but the driver and his helper had already fled, Saleh said.
