The National Consensus Commission is working to lay the groundwork for building a democratic and accountable state through national unity, according to its Vice-Chairman Ali Riaz.

Speaking at the opening of a dialogue with the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) at the LD Hall of the National Parliament building on Tuesday, he said that while political parties may have differences in opinion, there is hope for agreement on many core issues, according to bdnews24.com.

“The goal of the Consensus Commission is to develop a national charter that can provide a framework for the future of Bangladesh -- a guide to help us identify the path ahead. We are working towards that vision.”

Discussing ongoing talks with various political parties, Riaz noted that even when parties sit on opposite sides of the table, they are united by a common goal.

“The goal for which the CPB has long struggled as a political party aligns with this discussion. Therefore, there’s no reason to believe today’s dialogue is the end of the road. The task now is to clearly define the structural changes through discussion and to chart a path for implementing them. Defeating fascist rule is merely one step in achieving victory,” he said.

The CPB delegation was led by its President Mohammad Shah Alam and General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince.

Members of the National Consensus Commission present at the event included Badiul Alam Majumdar, Safar Raj Hossain, Iftekharuzzaman, Justice Emdadul Haque, and the chief advisor's special aide Monir Haider.
