After the long Durga Puja vacation, the Rajshahi University (RU) campus has once again become vibrant with the return of students and renewed electioneering for the upcoming Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) polls.

However, allegations of breaching electoral code of conduct have sparked tension. The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)-backed Oikyoboddho Notun Projonmo and the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed Somonnito Chhatra Jote panels have filed written complaints against each other to the Election Commission (EC).

Shibir's allegations included Chhatra Dal candidates campaigning inside classrooms, offering Tk 5,000 to students of the Arabic department, conducting activities beyond the permitted hours, and involving non-voters in campaigns.

In response, JCD accused Shibir-backed candidates and their supporters of distributing food and special gifts to voters in residential halls and departments, thereby undermining a level-playing field.

Fahim Reza, GS candidate from Somonnito Chhatra Jote, said: "Earlier, JCD violated the code in different ways, but we did not file written complaints. This time we've informed the EC to ensure fair participation and a level-playing field."

Meanwhile, VP candidate of Oikyoboddho Notun Projonmo, Sheikh Nur Uddin Abir, said: "We've repeatedly informed the EC verbally about violations. Today, we've filed a written complaint with proof. The allegations Shibir made against us are baseless. We respect the electoral code."

He further added: "No food packets or gifts can buy the conscience of the RU students. Those trying to influence the voters with money must stop. Let us work together for holding a fair and credible RUCSU election."

Chief Election Commissioner Prof F Nazrul Islam confirmed receiving the complaints, saying: "Both the panels have submitted memorandums drawing our attention to various issues. We will review them."
