A low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal could develop into a cyclone, says the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid said on Sunday evening, "It is expected to turn into a depression by Monday afternoon or the following morning. Afterwards, it may intensify into a cyclone.”

“Once it becomes a depression, we will know whether it will head towards Odisha or strike Bangladesh," he added.

The impact of the low pressure is expected to bring increased rainfall by Wednesday, which could last for two to three days, reports bdnews24.com.

If the low pressure transforms into a cyclone, it will be named 'Dana,' a name proposed by Qatar, meaning 'a very beautiful and valuable pearl' in Arabic.

The cyclones in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are named by the World Meteorological Organisation’s regional cyclone agency ESCAP.

New cyclone names are selected sequentially from a list provided by 13 countries in the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), said the low pressure in the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjacent Andaman Sea could intensify into a depression by Tuesday and potentially evolve into a cyclone by Wednesday.

It may move towards the coasts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, or West Bengal.

In its regular weather bulletin, the BMD said from 6pm Sunday to the next 24 hours, rain or thundershowers may occur in a few areas in the Chattogram division, while the weather will remain mainly dry with partly cloudy skies in other regions.

As of Sunday evening, Panchagarh’s Tentulia recorded the highest rainfall at 28 millimetres in the past 24 hours. The highest temperature of the day was 34.5°C in Feni.

Earlier, Cyclone Remal hit the Bangladesh coast and West Bengal on May 26, causing widespread devastation and claiming 76 lives across both Bangladesh and India.
