The death toll from a fire that through a building housing foreign workers in Kuwait early Wednesday increased to 49.
Abdul Hossain, Labour Counsellor at the Bangladesh Embassy in Kuwait, confirmed that no Bangladeshi nationals were among the victims. "According to updated information from the company and hospital, no Bangladeshi worker died in today's fire incident," Hossain told UNB after visiting the site of the fire.
The company that housed its workers in the building had not submitted any job demand letters for attestation by the Bangladesh Embassy, indicating no official employment connections with Bangladeshi workers.
According to Reuters, Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah informed that the death toll from the fire reached 49.
Among the deceased, 41 were Indians, including 11 from Kerala state.
Visiting the site, Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah said "the greed of real estate owners is what leads to these matters". It was not immediately clear if any violations had taken place at the building or what they were.
