Ekushey Padak-winning Rabindra Sangeet artist Papia Sarwar passed away on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. She was 72.
Her husband, Sarwar Alam, confirmed the news, stating she breathed her last at 8:00am. Papia Sarwar had been battling cancer for several years and was recently treated at multiple hospitals in Dhaka, according to local media.
Born on 21 November 1952 in Barisal, Papia Sarwar demonstrated a passion for Rabindra Sangeet from a very young age. She joined Chhayanaut in sixth grade and later trained at the Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts.
Over her career, Papia Sarwar earned widespread acclaim for her distinctive voice and masterful rendition of Rabindra Sangeet. Her debut album, Papia Sarwar, was released in 1982.
She is survived by her husband and two children.
