Setu Bhaban attack case: Asif Mahtab denied bail

Former BRAC University lecturer Asif Mahtab Utsha has been denied bail and sent to jail in connection with the vandalising of Setu Bhaban in Dhaka’s Banani area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shanto Islam Mallik delivered the verdict on Saturday (August 3)

After the end of his six-day remand, the accused was produced before the court today. Investigating Officer Abu Sayeed Miah, a Detective Branch Inspector, pleaded to keep Mahtab in custody until the completion of the investigation.

Mahtab's lawyer, Zainul Abedin Mejbah, applied for bail, which was opposed by the state. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered him to be sent to jail.

Earlier, on Monday (July 29), Mahtab was produced before the court and the investigating officer had sought a 10-day remand for a thorough investigation. In contrast, Mahtab’s lawyers sought bail and cancellation of the remand. After reviewing both sides, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mainul Islam denied bail and granted a six-day remand.
