Social media has become essential to our daily lives, providing a platform for us to interact, share, and discover. However, the growing amount of time we spend on social media platforms raises worries about its influence on our everyday lives.
Social media networks supply us with infinite stuff, ranging from breaking news to amusing videos and personal stories. Their addictive nature frequently entices us, taking our time and attention.
According to a UCWeb poll, 70 per cent of users in Bangladesh spend more than an hour on social networking sites. Approximately 23 per cent spend more than five hours daily on social networking sites. The global picture is considerably more terrifying. According to research by global tech care company Asurion, consumers in the United States reach for their gadgets 352 times daily, or once every two minutes and 43 seconds.
One of the primary concerns of excessive social media usage is its negative impact on productivity. When hours are spent scrolling through feeds and engaging in virtual interactions, precious time that could be devoted to work, studies, or other meaningful activities is lost. This not only affects individuals but also hampers national productivity levels. In Bangladesh, where workforce efficiency is crucial for economic growth, the extensive time loss on social media can impede progress and hinder personal development.
Nowadays, many people tend to compromise their important work due to the time wasted after endless reels and stories. Tasks that require a significant amount of time and effort are hastily completed as people surrender to the temptation of social media distractions. This trend is particularly prominent among students, who are more susceptible to the allure of online platforms. Consequently, the quality of work and the overall productivity of individuals suffer as they struggle to balance their academic obligations with the constant pull of social media.
Another significant aspect to consider is the detrimental effect on mental health. Studies have shown a correlation between excessive social media usage and increased feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. The constant exposure to curated and idealised lives on social media platforms can lead to negative self-comparisons, damaging self-esteem and mental well-being.
In a world where mental health awareness is gaining much attention, it is essential to recognise the potential risks associated with prolonged social media use.
Educational goals may suffer if assignment, study, and research take second place to skim feeds and viewing videos. Instead of being a source of distraction and time loss, the availability of educational resources on social media platforms should be wisely utilised. Encouraging students to use social media carefully and in moderation can help them establish a balance between academic and recreational interests.
Paradoxically social media, which is supposed to link people, can add to a sense of social isolation. Excessive dependence on virtual interactions can reduce face-to-face contact, resulting in less meaningful relationships. Our country is known for its strong social fabric. The potential erosion of traditional values and community bonds due to excessive social media use calls for a cautious approach to its usage.
