'Parasyte: The Grey' dives into existential threat from aliens and human survival

The newest K-drama on Netflix, Parasyte: The Grey, immerses viewers in a world where parasites from space threaten human survival. This series presents a distinctive fusion of sci-fi horror and character-driven drama. It is adapted from Hitoshi Iwaaki's manga Parasyte and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, a South Korean filmmaker known for Train to Busan. The six-hour episodes promise an intriguing narrative from start to finish.

The story follows Jeong Su-in (Jeon So-nee), a seemingly ordinary grocery employee whose life takes a terrible turn when she becomes the host for Heidi, a parasitic extraterrestrial creature. As Su-in and Heidi negotiate their uneasy coexistence, they must fight the dangers of other parasitic entities seeking to take over humanity. This dynamic duo is at the centre of the series, with So-nee giving an outstanding performance that portrays Su-in's resistance and vulnerability.

Su-in is joined on her risky mission by Seol Kang-woo (Koo Kyo-han), a persistent parasite hunter motivated by personal tragedy. Their blossoming relationship lends emotional depth to the story, intriguingly exploring loyalty and sacrifice in the face of tremendous odds. However, the series suffers from pace concerns, especially in the middle, where the formation of 'Team Grey' and introducing new characters break the narrative flow.

Underwhelming aspects 

While Parasyte: The Grey excels in world-building and realistic effects, its use of CGI in key moments may be hit-or-miss. Some action scenes are well-choreographed and thrilling, while others need more unsteady camerawork and editing. 

Positive 

Despite these problems, the series' visual quality remains consistent, with decent cinematography and eye-catching special effects that capture the darkness of its post-apocalyptic setting.

One of the show's strengths is its exploration of moral ambiguity and the complications of surviving in a society invaded by hostile forces. Characters make difficult decisions and confront the repercussions of their actions, adding depth to the plot. However, the lack of development for secondary characters and the inconsistent pacing hamper the overall viewing experience.

For fans of the original manga, Parasyte: The Grey provides a new perspective on known concepts, with an important aspect waiting at the series finale. While it may not meet the quality of filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho's prior work, it delves into an exciting journey of extraterrestrial mystery and human tenacity. As viewers immerse themselves in this captivating story, they'll be on the edge of their seats, waiting for the next twist in Su-in and Heidi's journey.
