Beat the heat with Ayurvedic solutions

Summer brings longer days and warmer weather, but it also brings unique health challenges. Due to increased sweating and fluid loss, high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke.

The cardiovascular system strains to regulate body temperature, often resulting in fatigue. The heat can also worsen respiratory issues and cause skin problems like rashes and sunburn. Digestive issues, such as discomfort and indigestion, are common as well. To mitigate these effects, thousands of years old Ayurvedic formulas can be a source of help. How can the Ayurvedic method help reduce summer health issues?  

Dehydration

Due to increased perspiration, dehydration is a frequent issue in summer. Ayurveda suggests staying hydrated with natural, cooling beverages. Amla juice, rich in vitamin C, helps maintain hydration and replenish electrolytes.

Mix fresh amla juice with water and a pinch of salt for a refreshing drink. Coconut water, naturally rich in electrolytes, is also an excellent choice to keep the body hydrated and cool.

Heat rash

Excessive sweating can lead to heat rash, causing blocked sweat glands and skin irritation. Ayurveda recommends applying fresh aloe vera gel to heat rash for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties.

Sunburn

Prolonged sun exposure can cause painful sunburns. Ayurveda suggests using cucumber and mint paste for its cooling properties. Blend cucumber and mint leaves into a paste and apply to sunburned areas to cool the skin and reduce inflammation. Aloe vera gel can be applied directly to soothe and heal sunburned skin.

Indigestion

Summer heat can cause digestive issues like bloating, acidity, and indigestion. Ayurveda recommends consuming buttermilk to cool the body. Add roasted cumin powder and black salt to buttermilk and drink it after meals.

Fatigue

High temperatures can cause fatigue and lethargy. Ayurveda suggests consuming ashwagandha, an adaptogenic herb that increases energy levels and reduces stress.

Consuming ashwagandha powder with milk can help combat fatigue.

Prickly heat

Prickly heat, or miliaria, occurs when sweat gets trapped under the skin, causing small, itchy bumps. Applying a paste of neem and basil leaves will help in that case.

Neem has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, while basil, or Tulsi, is known for its soothing and cooling properties. Crush basil and neem leaves with rose water and apply directly to the affected areas to soothe the skin and prevent infection.

Ayurveda offers a wealth of natural remedies to combat common summer problems. Incorporating these practices into your routine can alleviate discomfort and enhance well-being during the hot summer. These remedies are effective and promote a balanced relationship with nature, ensuring you stay healthy and refreshed all season long.
