At least 22 people were injured in clashes between Awami League activists and protesters in Uttara, Dhaka, on Sunday afternoon.
Nine of the injured are being treated at Uttara Modern Hospital, while 13 are receiving medical attention at Crescent Hospital.
The incident occurred around 12 noon in Azampur when clashes erupted between Awami League activists and a group of protesters. Former Awami League MP Habib Hasan was delivering a speech at a camp in Azampur when the clashes began. The situation escalated quickly as both sides engaged in a chase, leading to vandalism at the Awami League camp and a motorcycle being set on fire. Gunshots were fired at the protesters, and the police deployed tear gas to disperse them.
Protesters subsequently blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway from House Building to Jashimuddin around 1:00 pm, setting tyres on fire to express their grievances.
These violent incidents come amid ongoing protests led by the 'Anti-discrimination Student Movement', who are demanding the government's resignation. The movement has been observing a non-cooperation programme since Sunday.
