Heavy fog has caused a six-way collision after vehicles veered out of control at a single intersection in Rangpur.
Though no deaths have been reported in the incident, some 25-30 people have been injured.
The accident occurred at the Garer Matha intersection on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway in Mithapukur around 7:30 am on Saturday, according to Moniruzzaman, chief of the Baradargah Highway Police.
The vehicles involved in the accident were three buses, a truck, a pickup truck, and a covered van, reports bdnews24.com.
The vehicles, which had come from Dhaka, veered out of control due to the fog, said Moniruzzaman. This led to them all crashing into each other at the four-way intersection.
“The windshields of several vehicles were broken and some of them were damaged a bit. About 25-30 people were injured in the accident. Some of them were seriously hurt and taken to the hospital,” he said.
“Sand and soil-laden trucks use the highway every day. Soil that fell from these trucks were wettened by the morning dew, making the road slippery. The heavy fog also reduced the visibility and this may have led to the drivers losing control of their vehicles and crashing into each other.”
The traffic on the highway has now returned to normal, Moniruzzaman said.
“The vehicles involved in the accident have been removed. It wasn’t a major accident.”
The heavy fog on the highways in the Rangpur region have seriously reduced visibility in some areas, the police official said. He advised drivers to use their headlights and for pedestrians and drivers to not speed and to proceed carefully.
At least seven people had been killed in five separate accidents on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway, including in the Pirganj District, on Friday, Moniruzzaman said.
Mohammad Tariqul Islam, superintendent of Rangpur Region Highway Police, said: “There were 146 deaths from 195 road accidents on national and regional highways in Rangpur in 2024. The victim were 120 men, 22 women, and four children. A total of 152 cases have been filed over these accidents.”
He urged everyone to travel at a controlled speed and follow traffic laws to avoid the risk of deaths on roads and highways amid the fog typical in the winter.
