The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the financial intelligence agency of the central bank, has been freezing bank accounts of individuals and institutions one after another since August 5 to prevent money laundering from the country.

The organisation also stated that efforts are underway to identify funds laundered abroad.

Approximately 300 accounts have been frozen since the fall of the Awami regime, BFIU sources said on Tuesday.

In contrast, a total of 100 cases have been filed. These accounts hold a significant amount of money.

If the money is proven to have been misappropriated in the legal proceedings, the seized funds will be deposited in the Bangladesh Bank treasury.

However, if the allegations in the case are not proven, the accounts will be returned, according to the BFIU.

“Although it’s a lengthy process, if the location of the funds is identified, there is a possibility of bringing them back”, said AKM Ehsan, Deputy Head of the BFIU.
