Police have filed a total of 36 cases against 1,544 individuals, including unknown persons, for their alleged involvement in deteriorating law and order and creating violence during the BNP's rally in the capital on October 28, according to a DMP official.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner KN Roy informed the media that the cases were filed at various police stations in the capital.
On October 28, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) organised a large rally in the capital, during which violent clashes erupted between the police and BNP supporters near Kakrail.
According to bdnews24.com, law enforcers apprehended 696 people in connection with the violence, and 256 were arrested on Sunday, KN Roy said.
Many unnamed individuals were also included as suspects in these cases, he said.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been arrested in a case over an attack on the residence of the chief justice and sent to jail.
BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas are among the 164 suspects named in connection with the killing of a policeman, said Md Salauddin, chief of Paltan Police Station.
Six cases have been filed over arson and property damage, according to Hafizur Rahman, chief of Shahjahanpur Police Station.
Some 50 people, including Mirza Abbas, were named as suspects in one of the cases. Another 700 – 800 people were also accused.
