Fraudsters posing as ACC officials

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) issued a public warning on Monday about organised fraudsters impersonating the ACC officials to extort or steal money from individuals.

These groups have been contacting government officials, businesspersons, and private individuals, claiming that they have corruption charges filed against them, according to the ACC statement.

They offer to resolve these alleged charges in exchange for financial benefits, often using intimidation tactics.

The ACC statement said several people have already become victims to this scam, suffering financial losses.

To appear legitimate, the fraudsters employ various deceptive methods, including using photos of the ACC officers, cloning official ID cards, and creating fake social media profiles.

The ACC has requested the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and other law-enforcement agencies to take swift actions against those groups involved in such fraudulent schemes.

If a formal investigation is initiated, the individuals concerned will always receive a written notice from the assigned investigating officer, the commission clarified.

The ACC officials are strictly prohibited from contacting individuals by phone to about discuss investigations.

The citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious calls or demands for money to their nearest police station or RAB office. They can also contact the ACC directly by dialing its toll-free hotline number, 106.
