The home ministry has dismissed as fake a viral audio clip that purportedly featured Home Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury directing police to attack Gono Odhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur.
In a statement issued on Saturday morning, the ministry condemned the audio, saying it was fabricated.
Nur, a former DUCSU vice-president, was assaulted on Friday during clashes near the Jatiya Party office in Dhaka's Kakrail, with videos circulating online showing him being beaten by police and military personnel.
The Army later said in a statement that its members were deployed only to assist police, adding that five soldiers had been injured. It reaffirmed its “zero tolerance” policy towards “mob violence".
Amid the uproar, an audio clip resembling Jahangir’s voice spread widely on social media.
The recording allegedly captured him instructing a police officer to attack Nur, saying: “Charge with batons en masse. If you find Nur in front, break his hands and legs.”
When the officer expressed concern about the fallout, the purported voice replied that he was acting under orders from the chief advisor and threatened the officer with disciplinary action.
The ministry, however, insisted that the voice was not Jahangir’s but rather a distorted or AI-generated imitation. “Anyone familiar with his voice would recognise this is not authentic,” the statement read.
The 25-second clip was shared from multiple fake Facebook accounts, including one named “Ismail Chowdhury Samrat”.
Officials warned that producing and spreading such fabricated recordings mislead the public, violate law and order, and fuel rumours. The ministry said those responsible would be identified and face strict legal consequences, while cautioning others against creating or sharing false audio content online.
