Ban on single-use plastic in Secretariat from October

The use of government-declared single-use plastic (SUP) items will be banned in the Secretariat from October 2, Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid announced on Tuesday.

To ensure smooth implementation, a preparatory period will be provided throughout August and September, during which officials will be directed to gradually reduce the use of harmful plastic items, he said.

He made this announcement while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled "Sustainable Plastic Use in the Secretariat: A Future for a Single-Use Plastic Free Environment", organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Environment Secretary Farhina Ahmed, who chaired the seminar, stated that the ministry will soon formulate and implement a detailed action plan to enforce the ban. She handed over an illustrated list of 17 identified single-use plastic items to the cabinet secretary.
