Minister talks tough against polythene production
The government is taking strict action against the producers of plastic and polythene which are harmful to humans.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin said this adding that mobile courts are being run against production, transportation, marketing and storage of banned polythene bags.
From January 2019 to February 2023, a total of 2198 raids were conducted and 3617 cases were collected. Some 169 persons were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment and 1,745 metric tonnes of polythene, grains and raw materials were seized. He said, this process of taking measures will continue in the coming days, he said.
The environment minister came up with this information while delivering his speech as chairman at the opening ceremony of the World Environment Day and Environment Fair 2023 and 'National Tree Planting Campaign and National Tree Fair 2023' at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre on Monday.
Minister of Information and Broadcasting Dr Hasan Mahmud attended the event as the chief guest.
In the year 2022, the winner in the category of wildlife conservation officer, renowned researcher, scientist, wildlife conservationist and media worker/personality Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, divisional forest officer, Chittagong Hill Tracts North Forest Division, Rangamati.
The winner in the wildlife education and research category was Dr Aminuzzaman Md Saleh Reza, professor, Department of Zoology, University of Rajshahi.
Winner in the category of organisations dedicated to wildlife conservation Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation Federation (BBCF), Jamtala, Karmichael Road, Seuzgari, Bogra. Dr SM Iqbal will accept the award for his organisation.
Each Bangabandhu Award for Wildlife Conservation winning person/institution will be awarded a cash equivalent to the market value of two bhoris gold, a cheque of Tk 50,000 and a certificate. Three (3) persons have been selected for the award in 2022 in three categories.
National Environment Award 2022 on Environment Conservation and Pollution Control (Individual) category is awarded to Zibonananda Roy, sub assistant agriculture officer, Department of Agricultural Extension, Batiaghata Upazilla, Khulna.
National Environment Award 2022 on Environmental Education and Publicity (Individual) category is awarded to Prof Dr Tuhin Wadud, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Department of Bangla, Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur and Director, Riverine People. National Environment Award 2022 on Environment Related Research and Technology Innovation (Individual) category is awarded to Dr SM Mofizul Islam, Senior Scientific Officer, Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Satkhira.
National Environment Award 2022 on Environment Conservation and Pollution Control (Institute) category is awarded to Incepta Pharmaceuticals Limited.
National Environment Award 2022 on Environmental Education and Publicity (Institute) category is awarded to Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS).
Each National Environment award 2022 winner, Individual or Institution, will receive an amount of cash equivalent to market price of Two Tola Gold, a cheque of Fifty Thousand Taka, a Crest and a Certificate.
The Prime Minister's National Award for Plantation 2021 was also distributed.
As per the existing policy, Prime Minister's National Award for Tree Plantation 2021 winners/institutions in each category will receive a check of Tk 100,000 for the first prize, Tk.75,000 for the second prize and Tk 50,000 for the third prize along with a certificate and a crest.
Apart from this, beneficiary checks will be given to 10 beneficiaries who have received maximum share in social forestry. Some Tk 5628,727 were given to 5 male beneficiaries and Tk 1869,116 to 5 female beneficiaries.
The environment fair will run from June 5 to June 11. The tree fair will run from 5 to 26 June and 1 to 12 July 2023 as Eid-ul-Azhar is an official holiday from 27 to 30 June.
