BD may deploy peacekeepers, if UN wants

Bangladesh will consider deployment of its peacekeepers in the buffer zone between Russia and Ukraine after ceasefire, if the UN approaches, said Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain.

"This is not the right time to comment on the issue, as we want ceasefire and peace first. Then if the UN wants our peacekeepers there, we may consider it."

He said these when asked to comment on a report, which said the US is contemplating to deploy peacekeepers from Bangladesh in the Russia-Ukraine buffer zone.

The US could take a lead role in monitoring the buffer zone, NBC News reported on Friday.

The buffer zone would be a large demilitarised zone. It could additionally be secured by troops from one or more non-NATO countries, such as Saudi Arabia or Bangladesh, said the report.
