Border Guard Bangladesh has deployed its troops at Dhaka University and in two more districts in an effort to maintain the law and order situation amid the ongoing quota reform protest movement.

The BGB were previously deployed at Jahangirnagar University and six other districts, according to bdnews24.com.

The quota protests throughout the past two weeks turned deadly on Tuesday as six people were killed in Rangpur, Dhaka, and Chattogram as protesters clashed with police and the Chhatra League.

On Tuesday, the BGB were deployed in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Bogura, Rangpur and Rajshahi in two separate announcements by spokesman Shariful Islam.

The notices stated that they would be deployed in the Jahangirnagar University area too.

A day later, spokesman Shariful said in a statement that the BGB would also be deployed in the Faridpur and Cox’s Bazar districts. In a separate notice, the BGB also announced that it would deploy personnel to the Dhaka University area.

Meanwhile, police have sealed off all entry points to the Dhaka University campus in the early hours of Wednesday after two days of unrest and violence. One staff member of the proctor’s office was on duty at each point.

Late on Tuesday night, ADC Shah Alam Akhtarul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division and other police personnel were blocking the Shahbagh entrance to the campus. They did not allow anyone to enter.

The university was closed and the halls were vacant and so no one was allowed to enter the campus, they told everyone.

Some people tried to enter the campus on motorcycles around 2am on Thursday but were barred by the police.

One person said he was a university student and had left campus for an important task. When asked why he was not allowed to enter, ADC Akhtar shouted at him:

 “Don’t speak any further!”

The group of motorcyclists then went left.

A team of 25-30 policemen led by Sub Inspector Kamal Hossain were posted at the Nilkhet entry point. They only allowed students carrying identity cards to enter.

BGB and police remained on campus late into the night. RAB-3 personnel patrolled the campus on many vehicles.

Police did not allow anyone to enter the campus from Wednesday morning to the afternoon. Students are allowed to leave the campus, but no one was allowed to enter unless there was an emergency.
