The seventh spell of a 48-hour countrywide blockade programme called by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other opponents starts at 6: 00 am today (Sunday) to press home their demand for the immediate resignation of the government.

Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a virtual press briefing on Thursday announced the blockade programme requesting all to make it a success.

The opposition parties have been on the movement, also demanding cancellation of the national election schedule, and holding the parliamentary polls under a neutral caretaker government.

BNP has been observing hardline political programmes like hartal and blockade since police clashed with BNP leaders and activists at the party's grand rally in Dhaka on October 28.

Later BNP and its like-minded parties observed a three-day (October 31, Nov 1-2, 2023) countrywide blockade programme.

Their long-time ally Jamaat-e-Islami and like-minded parties are also observing the same programmes separately. So far, the opposition camps have observed 15days of blockade in six phases and three days of strike in two phases.

They observed their second phase of blockade programme on November 5-6 and the third phase on November 8-9.

They also observed blockade on November 11-12 in the fourth phase, on November 15-16 in the fifth phase and November 22-23 in the sixth phase.

Meanwhile, law enforcing agencies personnel including police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have been put on alert at different roundabouts and important places of the city to thwart any untoward attacks by the miscreants during the latest blockade.
