The Election Commission (EC) has announced BNP candidate Shahadat Hossain as Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation ( CCC), following the verdict issued by the port city’s electoral tribunal.
The EC Secretariat issued a gazette notification replacing Awami League-backed former mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury with him on Tuesday, reports bdnews24.com.
Atiar Rahman, deputy secretary of the EC's election management wing, said the gazette notification for Shahadat has been issued with the approval of the law ministry after the tribunal's verdict.
"The gazette will be sent to the Local Government Division now. The government will take the next step."
On Oct 1, the Chattogram Electoral Tribunal declared Shahadat as CCC mayor three and a half years after the election was held.
District and Session Judge Mohammad Khairul Amin of the Chattogram Electoral Tribunal passed the verdict.
Shahadat, former organising secretary of the BNP, filed the case with the electoral tribunal complaining of vote rigging and seeking the cancellation of the election result.
