Boy dies as boats collide during Durga idol immersion

A 12-year-old boy has died following a collision between two boats during idol immersion in the Jhinai River in Tangail's Kalihati Upazila.

The incident took place at the Old Thana Ghat area under Kalihati municipality on Sunday afternoon, said Kalihati Police Station chief Md Abul Kalam Bhuiyan, bdnews24.com reports.

The victim, identified as Apu Pal, was a resident of South Betdoba village of the municipality.

Citing local residents, the OC Abul said several boats had gone out for a trip before the idol immersion, a common practice during the annual festival of the Durga Puja.

During the outing, two boats collided, causing Apu to fall into the water and sustain injuries.

With the help of local residents, police managed to rescue him and took him to Kalihati Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The OC said the body will be handed over to the family after completing the legal procedures.
