Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has directed International Internet Gateway (IIG) operators to increase internet speeds across the country. The decision was made following a meeting with the State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak and senior BTRC officials on Thursday.
The BTRC has also ordered the IIG operators to activate Google's cache servers, ensuring smoother access to YouTube and Google services.
However, popular social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok will remain blocked for now.
The decision comes after broadband internet services were cut off across the country on the night of July 18 amid quota reform protests. The services were restored in limited areas on the night of July 23, with nationwide service resuming on Wednesday night.
The BTRC further stated that mobile internet services may resume as early as Sunday or Monday.
