Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has formed a 'Student Torture Matters Fact-Evidence Collection Cell' and a 'Legal Support Cell' to document the abuses committed by the Chhatra League at Dhaka University.
The DU Chhatra Dal confirmed this in a press release on Wednesday night.
The press release said, “Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina from 2009 to 2024, the leaders and activists of the Chhatra League have grossly violated the law and human rights by brutally torturing ordinary students, including the leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and other opposition organisations.'
"This AL government has made the judicial system of Bangladesh extremely partisan and has not allowed fair investigation and trial processes for these heinous incidents to proceed. Therefore, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Dhaka University, has constituted an 'Evidence Collection Cell' and a 'Legal Aid Cell' demanding justice and preserve the true history regarding the incidents of student torture," it added.
The members of the 'Evidence Collection Cell' are: Abu Afsan Mohammad Yahya, ABM Ijazul Kabir Ruel, Manjurul Alam Riad, Khorshed Alam Sohel, Ariful Islam, Ganesh Chandra Roy Shahos, and Nahiduzzaman Shipan.
The members of the 'Legal Aid Cell' are: Md Sajjad Hossain Sabuj, HM Zahidul Islam, Md Al Amin, Md Rafiqul Islam Himel, Mallik Wasi Uddin, and SM Saif Quader Rubab.
The press release also said, "The members of the two cells will assist in taking legal action by collecting evidence of the torture of students with opposing views and common students at Dhaka University during the rule of the Awami League. Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal also expects cooperation from ordinary students and media workers in this regard."
Nahiduzzaman Shipon, general secretary of Dhaka University Chhatra Dal, said that since 2009, the Chhatra League has formed torture cells at Dhaka University to abuse general students and has committed extreme human rights violations to obstruct free speech and suppress dissenting opinions.
"This cell has been formed to identify those involved in all incidents and take legal action against them." he added.
