CA meets heads of reform commissions

Commission mulls plan for postal ballots

The reform commission on elections is exploring the possibility of introducing postal ballots for the upcoming elections, allowing voters to cast their votes without visiting polling centres.

Badiul Alam Mazumder, head of the Electoral Reform Commission, conveyed this during a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and the heads of various reform commissions.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the reform commissions formed by the interim government, said a spokesperson from the Chief Adviser’s Office.

The commission also informed the meeting that they are conducting consultations with stakeholders on various aspects of the electoral process. The committee aims to ensure the participation of expatriate Bangladeshis and is also addressing issues related to increasing women voters' involvement in elections.

Mr Mazumder informed that his committee is currently examining the alignment of National ID cards with the voter list.

Meanwhile, Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury, head of the Administrative Reform Commission, reported that they have held several meetings and are on track to submit their report by the deadline.

He mentioned that the commission has consulted with representatives from various cadre services and gathered their opinions. Members of his commission have also visited different upazilas and districts to engage with stakeholders on administrative reform.

The head of the Police Reform Commission Safar Raj Hossain informed the meeting that they are reviewing a plan to amend the Criminal Procedure Code of 1898. The commission has held ten meetings so far and has posted a questionnaire on its website to gather public opinions on police reform.

The commission is also working on finding ways and means to control mob without using force, Mr Hossain told the meeting.
