The Local Government Division has formed a committee to run programmes for city corporations across the country, including Dhaka and Chattogram.

The administrators in the city corporations will head the committee, while the chief executive officers will be the secretary. The committee members are representatives from different government organisations.

The Local Government Division issued a notice in this regard on Thursday and uploaded it on the division’s website on Sunday, reports UNB.

“Until further notice, a ‘committee’ has been formed under section 25 (A) (2) of the ‘Local Government City Corporation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ to run the city corporation programmes properly,” the notice signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Shamsul Islam said.

As per the local government ordinance, the committee members will assist the city corporation administrators in performing their tasks and will be responsible as councillors.

The committee members will receive honorariums for their work, but the amount will not exceed Tk 5,000. They will not receive any other financial aid or benefits.

The number of committee members stands at 25 for Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporation.

Representatives from each of the Additional Divisional Commissioner’s office, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, RAJUK, National Housing Authority, Local Government Engineering Department, Public Works Department, Department of Architecture, Department of Public Health Engineering, Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL), Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) Directorate General of Health Services, Department of Environment, Department of Disaster Management, Department of Social Services, Bangladesh Power Development Board, Fire Service and Civil Defence, Department of Archaeology, Dhaka Additional District Administration, Dhaka WASA, Titas Gas, Department of Primary Education, and Department of Secondary and Higher Education will be the members of the committee.

Deputy commissioners of the divisional cities of Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet, Barishal, Rangpur, and Mymensingh will head the committees. The chief executive officers in those cities will be the secretaries. These city corporation committees will have 23 members coming from different government organisations.

A 17-member committee has been formed each for the Gazipur, Narayanganj and Cumilla city corporations. The administrators there will head the committee and chief executive officers will be the secretary.

The mayors in all city corporations were removed on Aug 19 after the Awami League government fell on Aug 5 in the face of a mass student-led uprising. The interim government appointed administrators in the city corporations on the same day.

The Rangpur City Corporation mayor was a member of the Jatiya Party but the mayors of all 11 other city corporations were Awami league leaders.

On Thursday, the Local Government Division issued two notices removing all general councillors and women councillors on reserved seats in 12 city corporations and 323 Municipal Corporations.

Most of the city mayors went into hiding or have been named in cases. The Awami League supporter councillors have not been attending their offices.
