Inhabitants of the remote frontier upazila Madhyanagar of Sunamganj district are deprived of appropriate treatment due to the absence of a upazila-level health complex there.

That is why people have to depend on quacks and pharmacists in the area.

They are forced to seek treatment in the health complexes of the neighbouring Dharmapasha or Kalmakanda upazilas of the district.

The critical patients finding no other means move to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Often patients die before reaching the healthcare facilities.

Madhyanagar thana was established in 1972 comprising Madhyanagar sadar, Chamardani, Bangshikunda Uttar and Bangshikunda Dakshin unions.

It was transformed into a upazila on July 26, 2021. About 150,000 people live in the 222 square km upazila.

In the meantime, the government established Madhyanagar Ma O Shishu Kalyan Kendra and Dariapara Fulennesa Ma O Shishu Kalyan Kendra.

The facilities are not sufficiently manned by physicians and other workforces, including trained midwives and nurses.

An official in Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex said the government approved establishment of a 20-bed upazila hospital and a physician was posted two years ago.

But due to absence of hospital infrastructure there, the physician has been serving in Dharmapasha Upazila Health Complex.
