The food department has started procurement of Boro paddy with a target of 35,536 tonnes from Sylhet division as harvest of the crop is about to end.

Of the division's target, 6,645 tonnes would be bought from Sylhet, 4749 tonnes from Moulvibazar, 6,659 tonnes from Habiganj and highest 17,483 tonnes from Sunamganj district, an official informed.

The food minister on May 07 virtually inaugurated the drive, which will continue till August 31. Upazila level target had also been set in consultation with the DAE officials for making the drive a success, the official said. Paddy would be bought for Taka 30 per kilogram from the growers.

Since there has been a good harvest in all the districts in the division, farmers in the highest Boro producing districts Sunamganj and Habiganj also demanded an increase in procurement target.

Farmer Abdul Hasib of Golapganj upazila in Sylhet said the government should increase the price since the farmers suffered much due to increase in the price of seed, fertiliser etc as well as labour cost this year.
