LALMONIRHAT, Oct 07: Flood situation in Lalmonirhat's five upazilas has significantly improved in the last 24 hours to Tuesday as water receded in the Teesta and Dharla river basin areas and also due to no rainfall, or onrush of upstream waters in the greater Rangpur region.
Sources at the Teesta Barrage authority said that the water level of Teesta sharply fallen due to the reduction in the onrush of upstream water .The water level of Teesta was recorded 51.70 cm on Tuesday morning at Duwani point which remains below the danger mark.
The trend of falling will continue, and within 12 hours water level may be reduced by 30 cm more, the sources said. According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Lalmonirhat, there is no risk of massive crop damage as water has been receding sharply. A total of 905 hectares of various croplands were inundated by floodwaters, but water already receded from most of these affected areas, Lalmonirhat DAE Deputy Director Dr. Md. Saykhul Arefin said. According to the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) sources, a total of 500 metres of rural roads in Aditmari, Hatibandha and Patgram Upazilas have been damaged by the floods. They said they are placing sand sacks in some places as a temporary measure to make those usable.
