The authorities took no steps to construct a new bridge even in 7 years after the damage of the old one on the Naiadara river in Jogonnathpur upazila under Sunamganj district.
About 40,000 inhabitants of the 10 villages have been suffering as they have to walk through the alternate kutcha road of 1.5 km additional walk. During a recent visit to the site, a part of the structure was seen on the river while the other in the water.
The LGED constructed the bridge on Provakarpur-Nandirgaon Mosjid Road in 2000. Part of it was damaged by the floods in 2016 snapping the plying of vehicles through the important road. But the locals' demand for reconstruction of the bridge is yet to be met.
Some girl students of a local high school said that they have to walk an additional 1.5 km on a kutcha road to reach the school. Same is the view of a college student.
Patli Union Parishad member Sayad Mia said the inhabitants of 10 villages have been suffering much due to the absence of the bridge. The locals were dependent on the bridge to go to the Rosulganj bazar, schools and college as well to the sadar union parishad and the upazila headquarters. We have requested the LGED for reconstructing the bridge as soon as possible, he added.
An official at the LGED said we would soon visit the site and inform the higher authority about construction of a new bridge.
