CHANDPUR, July 09: Patients have been suffering much as they are not getting proper treatment for want of doctors at Chandpur 250-bed Govt Hospital.

Being the biggest hospital in the district, on an average, about 400 people including babies get admitted to the hospital every day.

Most patients are poor who come from rural and 30 char areas in Chandpur Sadar, Haimchar, Matlab Uttar, Hajiganj, Faridganj and adjoining Shariatpur Sadar, Roypur and Ramganj Upazilas of Luxmipur district and other adjacent areas.

Chandpur Govt Medical College has been established on the 3rd floor of the hospital building. It has created accommodation problem in the hospital. It is not known when the new college will be shifted to its own premises in the Gasstgola area under Sadar Upazila.

There are 67 posts of doctors in the hospital but now 50 are working here. There is acute shortage of beds and staff nurses too. So, the patients have to stay on floor beds for days together.

Samrat, a boy from Chandpur town, said he has been staying on the floor for four days.

Sixty-year-old Shah Jamal of Faridganj, Jewel Mia, a dengue patient of Kalirbazar in Faridganj Upazila, and Shamim of Mohamaya area under Sadar Upazila have been lying on the floor for two days for want of beds.

Sixteen dengue patients now are admitted to the hospital's dengue wards. But there are no mosquito nets there. Visitors are crowding around them.

When asked about acute accommodation problem, hospital superintendent Dr AKM Mahbubur Rahman said there is no option for vertical extension of the existing three-storied hospital building as it was built in Pakistan regime. Accommodation problem is creating inconveniences to the patients, he added.

The residential accommodation for doctors, nurses, staff is not sufficient.

There are no cancer, kidney and Thalassemia specialist doctors in the hospital.

The emergency department is too small to accommodate the rush of patients. The same is the case with Dengue Ward.
