Court doors open to quota protestors: Chief Justice

Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has remarked that the doors of the court will always be open to the students and job seekers protesting against quota in government jobs.

He made this comment while addressing the lawyers and Supreme Court leaders during the hearing of a case in the Appellate Division on Thursday, reports bdnews24.com.

“Guide those who are protesting against the quota. Why do they talk about the executive department? Any decision taken by the executive department can be challenged in court."

“They can set forth their demands through lawyers. We will listen to them with sincerity,” he added.

The chief justice made these remarks during an appeal hearing against a judgement over the 16-point list of recommendations given to the National Assembly to build a corruption-free country.

Anti-Corruption Commission counsel Khurshid Alam Khan and Advocate Ruhul Kazal were present during the hearing.

“The High Court has given 16 recommendations to make this country corruption-free,” said Kazal at the hearing.

The chief justice retorted, “Why will we advise the parliament? Can we advise the parliament? The High Court can direct the government. And per the Constitution, the Supreme Court can advise if the president permits. The president has the free will to accept or dismiss the advice.”
