In a case involving the murder of a police officer in the capital's Jatrabari area, a Dhaka court has suspended the order for a seven-day remand for Hasnatul Islam Faiyaz, a juvenile suspect. The order was issued by the judge of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 on Sunday.
According to the police and court sources, the 17-year-old juvenile, a student of Dhaka College, was arrested in connection with the murder of a police officer. Police presented him at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (CMM) in Dhaka on Saturday, where they sought a 10-day remand for him and five others.
During the hearing on Saturday, the juvenile's lawyer argued that his client is a minor, with an official birth certificate confirming his age as 17. After hearing both sides, the court initially granted a seven-day remand for the juvenile and the other five suspects.
On Sunday, the juvenile's lawyer filed a new petition with the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3, arguing that, under the law, a minor cannot be remanded. The lawyer requested the court to stay the remand order.
The court then reviewed the juvenile’s birth certificate and other documents. Following the review, the court suspended the remand order and instead directed that the juvenile be sent to the Juvenile Development Center (JDC) in Tongi.
