Bangladesh has detected the omicron coronavirus sub variant JN.1.
The omicron sub variant was found in samples of five patients from Dhaka city and elsewhere in the country, Dr Tahmina Shireen, director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), told the FE on Thursday.
She, however, called on people not to be panicked as this sub variant is not much severe.
The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed this Omicron sub variant in December last year, classifying it as ‘variant of interest’.
This sub variant can spread very quickly, but it has less severity, said WHO.
Bangladesh on Thursday registered 18 new cases of Covid infections with no casualties.
