A court in Joypurhat has sentenced 11 people to life imprisonment for killing a college teacher in Joypurhat in 2009.
The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to serve 2 more years more imprisonment.
Judge Nurul Islam of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-2 of Joypurhat handed down the judgment on Wednesday afternoon.
The convicts are Asadul, Mujibur Rahman, Tofazzal Hossain, Abdul Hannan, Anichur, Kalam, Khairul, Babu, Sohail, Morshedul Hasan Moshiur and Azizul. Among them, all are absconding except Morshedul Hasan Moshiur and Azizul.
According to the prosecution, Ali Hasan Babu, son of Abul Kashem Mondol of Kankra village of Panchbibi Upazila of Joypurhat, was a teacher in the economics department of Shahargachi Adarsha Degree College, Gaibandha.
Besides teaching, he was involved in business in Paikardaria village. On the night of June 17, 2009, he left for home from his business establishment.
On the way, the accused killed Ali Hasan Babu and dumped the body in a river.
Later, his body was recovered from the river.
A murder case was filed at Panchbibi police station following a complaint lodged by Abu Bakkar, the elder brother of the victim.
