A Dhaka court has remanded former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam, former Exim Bank chairman and NASSA Group chief Nazrul Islam Mazumder, former additional deputy commissioner Shahen Shah, and Dhaka North Jubo Mohila League General Secretary Shamima Akhter in a series of cases linked to the July uprising.
On Monday morning, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jakir Hossain issued the remand orders granting law-enforcing agencies varying periods to question them in custody.
The court sent Atiqul on a four-day remand in a case linked to the killing of Shohag Mia under the capital's Bhatara Police Station, according to a bdnews24.com report
Meanwhile, Mazumder was placed on a three-day remand for the murder of an individual named Asif in the capital's Mirpur area during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
The court granted a three-day remand order for Shahen Shah in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim.
Shamima was placed on a two-day remand for the attempted murder of Tahmid Mubin Ratul in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi said authorities had initially sought longer remand periods—five days for Atiqul and Mazumder, 10 for Shahen Shah, and seven for Shamima.
The accused were produced in court for the hearing, during which their defence attorneys petitioned for bail and the dismissal of the remand orders.
Following deliberations, the court issued its ruling, allowing interrogations to proceed.
According to the allegations against Atiqul, Shohag Mia, a 16-year-old protester, was shot on Jul 19, 2024 during a demonstration in front of Farazi Hospital on Madani Avenue’s 100 Feet Road.
Witnesses said that a bullet entered the teenager’s left ear and exited through the back of his head. A murder case was filed on August 20, 2024 at the Bhatara Police Station, implicating 91 individuals.
Mazumder faces allegations related to the shooting of Asif during a protest at the Rabbani Hotel in Mirpur on July 19, 2024.
According to the case dossier, Asif sustained gunshot wounds and was transported by fellow demonstrators to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital before being transferred to National Institute of Neuro Sciences & Hospital for advanced care.
He later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. A murder case was subsequently filed at Mirpur Police Station on Nov 1, 2024 that named 22 suspects.
Meanwhile, Shahen Shah is implicated in the killing of Jubo Dal leader Shamim during a violent confrontation on Oct 28, 2023.
That day, both the BNP and the ruling Awami League had scheduled rallies in Dhaka, resulting in a clash.
Prosecutors allege that Shamim was targeted as part of a coordinated attack involving law-enforcing agencies.
A case was filed on September 24, 2024, at Paltan Police Station, listing Shahen Shah as the 49th suspect.
Shamima’s charges stem from the attempted murder of university student Ratul on July 16, 2024.
Prosecutors say he was shot while protesting, after which his home was attacked and vandalised.
His parents were also injured in the incident. A case was later filed at Tejgaon Police Station.
