Mukul Sheikh, a day labourer, was beaten to death over a land feud in the Dwipnagar area in Dhaka’s Gabtoli on Wednesday night.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 10:30pm on Wednesday, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
The body has been kept at the morgue of DMCH for an autopsy, said Inspector Md Faruk of the DMCH Police Outpost.
Mukul and his brother Rabbani Sheikh hailed from Shenachapri village in Sirajganj’s Shahjadpur and worked as day labourers in the Gabtoli area. Their family lives in the village. Mukul was the father of two children.
Rabbani said he rushed to save Mukul during the attack and was beaten as well.
"We began working as labourers in Gabtoli a month ago. We had a feud over land with the neighbours of our village home for a long time,” he said.
"As a result of the feud, a group of 15-20 people blocked our way around 8pm in Gabtoli’s Dwipnagar and beat us with hammers and iron pipes,” he said.
Mukul was critically injured and taken to DMCH with the help of the locals. “The doctors said he was dead on arrival.”
