The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) in Dhaka has ordered to publish a notice in two newspapers summoning 24 accused including former Begum Rokeya University (BRU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Hasibur Rashid in a case filed in connection with crimes against humanity over the killing of Abu Sayed during the July-August mass uprising.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2, headed by its Chairman Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order on Sunday after hearing a petition filed by the prosecution, and scheduled July 22 for holding further proceedings in the case.

Prosecutor Abdus Sattar Palwan submitted the petition before the ICT-2.

Begum Rokeya University student is considered as the first martyr of the July-August 2024 mass uprising. He was shot dead by police during a student protest in Rangpur on July 16, 2024, part of a nationwide movement against the Awami League-led government's controversial job quota system.

Earlier on July 10, the tribunal asked the authorities concerned to publish notice in newspapers summoning 26 accused of the case.

However, later it came to know that two of the accused had already been arrested in other cases. That is why the tribunal didn't sign the earlier order, and issued a fresh order in the case.

The tribunal asked the authorities concerned to publish the notice immediately asking the accused to appear before it by July 22.

On June 30, 2025, the International Crimes Tribunal-2 took the formal charge pressed against 30 individuals into its cognizance.

On Sunday, four of them, who are currently in custody, were produced in the tribunal. They are--- former BRU proctor Shariful Islam, Chhatra League (banned) leader Imran Chowdhury Akash, sub-inspector Amir Hossain, and constable Sujan Chandra Roy.

The tribunal asked the authorities to produce two accused Rafiul Hasan and Anwar Parvez, who are arrested in other cases, before it on the next hearing date.

According to the prosecution, before the killing of Abu Sayed on July 16, 2024, proctor Shariful and leaders and activists of BCL had attacked university students and forced them out of the campus.

At one point, two policemen shot and killed Abu Sayed at close range, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam had said earlier.

The family members of martyr Abu Sayed filed a complaint on January 13 in 2025 against 25 people over his killing.
