The tidal water has entered into Samitipara and Shutki Mahal areas of Cox's Bazar city as cyclone 'Remal' increased the sea level.
Many of the low-lying areas including Samiti Para Bazar to Kutubdia Para, Samiti Para, Mostak Para, and Bassinna Para have been flooded. People are looking for safe shelter as the water rises.
Cyclone Remal has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm. After 12 noon on Sunday (May 26), the tidal water started entering Samitipara.
Cox's Bazar seaport has been asked to hoist great danger signal number 9 to avoid the damage caused by the cyclone,
Cox's Bazar beach is rough due to sand. Tidal water is flowing 4-6 feet higher than normal. A red flag has been hoisted on the beach to show a danger signal.
Syed Hossain, a resident of the Samitipara area, told our correspondent, “After 12 noon, the tidal water suddenly entered into the area. Roads, shops, and houses are drowning in the flood. We left for the suburbs with the family.”
Ali Azgar, a local resident of the Kutubdia neighbourhood, said that the area is flooded by tidal water.
Municipal Councilor Akhter Kamal said that the residents of Samitipara are being evacuated to a safe shelter. Cyclone centre is ready, he said.
Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Muhammad Shaheen Imran said that 10 thousand 800 volunteers including 8600 of CPP and 2200 of Red Crescent have been prepared to deal with the disaster.
The DC said, “638 shelters are ready. The control room has been opened in the office of the District Commissioner. Besides, the leave of all government employees has been cancelled.”
According to the sources of the district administration, 486 tonnes of GR rice, Tk 0.27 million, Tk 1.82 million in the district disaster management fund, 29 bundles of cotton wool and Tk 69,000 in house construction allowance are stored.
