Daily dengue death toll still high

Health authorities on Thursday reported 15 deaths from the mosquito-borne dengue fever, taking the total fatalities to 1,370 this year.

Of the new fatalities, 11 were from outside Dhaka and 4 from Dhaka. Of the total deaths, 816 were from Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Meanwhile, 1,728 more people admitted to hospitals in the past 24 hours till Thursday morning 8:00 am, including 379 from Dhaka, said DGHS in daily update.

The ever worsening dengue situation showed growing numbers of cases were from outside Dhaka. Of the new cases of hospitalizations, 1,349 were reported from outside Dhaka.

The total dengue cases this year rose to 274,806. Of the total, 99,932 were from Dhaka, according to DGHS daily update.

The fatalities and cases of hospitalization due to the deadly mosquito borne disease are highest in the last 23 years in the country.

Dengue appears to coincide with the rainy season from May to September and higher temperatures in Bangladesh, said the World Health Organization (WHO).

A total of 6,270 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 1,762 were from Dhaka.

Of the total admitted, 267,166 patients made recovery and returned home, including 97,354 from Dhaka with a 97 per cent recovery rate on average.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.
