Dengue: Aug hospitalization surpasses previous monthly record

The death toll due to the mosquito-borne dengue fever stood at 506 on Wednesday as 13 new deaths were recorded across the country, including 8 from Dhaka.

Meanwhile, 2,070 hospitalizations were also recorded during the same period till 8:0 am Wednesday across the country, including 857 from Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Of the total deaths, 374 were from Dhaka, said DGHS.

With the new hospitalisations, August has seen 54,597 cases so far, surpassing the previous monthly record of 52,634 in August 2019.

The ever worsening dengue situation continues to deteriorate in other cities as the health authorities continue to record a growing number of new cases. DGHS reported 1,213 cases outside Dhaka.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, the second highest in the history of the country.

Meanwhile, the total dengue cases rose to 106,429. Of the total cases, 51,027 were from Dhaka, added DGHS.

A total of 7,825 people were being treated across the country in hospitals. Of them, 3,580 were from Dhaka. Of the total admitted, 98,098 patients made recovery and returned home, including 47,073 from Dhaka.

Meanwhile, the health minister Zahid Maleque on Wednesday said that the World Bank would give USD 100 million to control dengue.

The global lender would approve the funding at the board meeting at the end of August, he said while talking to reporters after a meeting with the delegation of the World Bank at the Secretariat on.
