Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has sold a building under construction for Tk 60,000 (excluding VAT, IT) through an open auction to demolish and remove the 10-storey building illegally built on Ramchandrapur canal in Mohammadpur’s Basila.
On March 13, Regional Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate of Region-05 Motakabbir Ahmed conducted the auction.
DNCC Chief Property Officer Dr Mohammad Mahe Alam was present at the time, UNB reports.
The highest bidder in the auction was directed to complete the demolition of the under-construction building within 10 days from March 13 and remove the debris. Demolition work has been going on since March 14.
Regional Executive Officer Motakabbir Ahmed said, ‘According to the map, the DNCC officials found that 80 per cent of the structure was constructed grabbing Ramchandrapur canal.”
After scrutinising the maps and documents, the building owner accepted that 80 per cent of the building fell on the canal boundary and the building owner sought seven days to demolish the building.
“As the owner failed to remove it within the stipulated time, it was later sold through an open auction as per the rules after talking to the owner of the building,” he added.
Earlier on February 23, the DNCC, led by its mayor Mayor Atiqul Islam, conducted a drive to clear the canal garbage and remove illegal structures on the canal.
BD Clean volunteers also joined the day-long garbage removal drive in a three-kilometre stretch of the water body.
