The High Court has labelled the arbitrary detention of people by the Detective Branch of Police (DB) and making them sit at a dining table as 'a mockery of the nation.'
“Whomever you detain, you make them sit at the table. Who told you to do these things? Don’t mock the nation this way,” the HC said on Monday during a hearing on a petition seeking a directive for the release of six quota reform movement leaders currently in the Detective Branch custody.
The hearing on the petition began at the High Court bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice S M Masud Hossain Dolan around 1:30 pm on Monday.
Earlier in the day, two Supreme Court lawyers -- Manjur Al Matin and Ainun Nahar Siddiqa -- filed the petition seeking an immediate release of six coordinators of the Students Against Discrimination movement and a directive against the use of firearms on protesters across the country.
The High Court has set Monday for delivery of the verdict on the writ.
