Drive against old buses, trucks postponed once again

Adviser says drive will start soon

The government once again deferred the move to launch drive against age-old buses and trucks from the city, citing probable issues in communication amid government plans to observe the July mass uprising anniversary.

Earlier, Rail, Road and Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan directed Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to start the drive. The agencies previously missed a deadline to commence the initiative.

The directive was issued from a meeting on June 22, to show the government's firm stance on an interim government's decision for withdrawing public transport vehicled aged 20 years and above. The interim government's decision was taken during a stakeholders meeting in December last.

While talking about the issue over the phone, the adviser told the FE that on request from the Home Ministry, the drive was not started on Tuesday.

"As the nation will observe the July upsurge, there might be problems in communication," he told the FE over phone.

The adviser did not confirm any new date but said it would be started soon.

Drive against unfit or aged old public transports is periodic, yet a common government activity, but they do not bring any fruitful results due to various reasons, including corruption.
