Students of Dhaka University on Wednesday gathered at Raju Memorial sculpture to protest against the High Court's verdict reinstating quotas in the civil service.

In an immediate reaction to the HC verdict, the students called on their fellows from all educational institutions of the country to join in protesting the decision.

They warned that they would go on a long-term movement if the quota system in the civil service is restored.

They added that any decision regarding the quota system should be discussed with students.

One of the students, Nahid Islam, from Dhaka University’s sociology department, said that freedom fighters are the best children of the nation. They should definitely be given their due respect.

Arguing against reinstating quotas in civil service, he said, “A 56 per cent quota cannot be justified in any country.

“When the government cannot provide sufficient employment opportunities, maintaining a 56 per cent quota is unreasonable.”

Earlier in the day, the High Court declared illegal the government 2018 decision to cancel the 30 per cent quota system for freedom fighters' children in civil service jobs, specifically for grades from nine to 13 (first and second classes of jobs).
