An elderly man has died after he and his wife were allegedly beaten during a robbery in Dhaka’s Jatrabari.

The injured couple were rescued and taken to hospital on Tuesday morning when the incident was reported. Ismail, 80, was then declared dead around 6:30 am by the doctor on duty.

His wife, 75-year-old Saleha Begum, is still receiving treatment and remains in danger, according to Sub-Inspector Awlad Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station.

“The couple lived on a second-floor flat in the four-storey ‘Khan Villa’ house in Ittadi Alley in Jatrabari’s Bibir Bagicha area. We went to the house when a robbery was reported. We did not find anyone else there and took the injured couple to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” he said.

“The husband later died in hospital, and his wife is still receiving treatment.”

Describing how the incident unfolded, he said: “As far as I know, a few people cut through the bars on the windows, entered, injured the couple, and looted their possessions. We can confirm the robbery after speaking to the family.”

Salma, the couple’s daughter and a resident of Kadamtali’s Rayerbag, came to the hospital accompanied by locals when she received word of the incident.

Salma says she believes the robbers cut through the bars, entered the house, and beat her parents. She thinks her father was smothered to death by a pillow and her mother was seriously injured.

She alleges that they also took money, jewellery, and other valuable items. She was, however, unable to give an initial estimate of how much had been stolen.
