Mohammad Rassel, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the much-talked-about e-commerce company Evaly, has been released from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur.
Rassel was released from prison on Monday afternoon, Central Jail-1 Jailer Md Tariqul Islam said on Tuesday.
He said Evaly’s CEO Rassel was imprisoned in this jail in multiple cases.
Tariqul Islam also said that they released Rassel from jail on Monday after verifying his bail documents in all cases, bangla.bdnews24.com reports.
A few years ago, at the beginning of the boom of e-commerce business, Evaly came to the attention of customers by selling various products including cars, motorcycles, household furniture, smart TVs, refrigerators, ACs, and washing machines at hefty discounts.
There were reports in the media that people - 'lured' by their dazzling offers - ordered products by paying huge sums of money in advance, in order to sell them at a higher price and thus make a good profit.
But many of them did not get the products even after waiting for months, nor did Evaly return them the money taken as advance.
Amid widespread discussion and criticism, customers rose up in protest against Evaly and several other e-commerce companies in mid-2021, accusing them of fraud and money embezzlement.
At the same time, there were several cases filed against them.
In one such case, on September 16, 2021, RAB arrested Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin from Mohammadpur in the capital. They were also interrogated on remand.
But the filing of cases against the couple didn't stop; one case after another continued to be filed against them.
Shamima, the former chairman of Evaly, was released on bail from prison on April 6, 2022, after eight months of imprisonment.
