Many users have reportedly been facing difficulties in accessing Facebook and Messenger through mobile internet since 12:30 pm on Friday.
Some users in Dhaka also reported that they were not getting new posts on the news feed of their Facebook accounts. However, these social media sites are accessible through broadband internet.
According to UNB, the restriction involves the suspension of cache access to Meta's platforms. This action marks the latest in a series of intermittent restrictions on social media in the country, though the specific reasons for the current shutdown remain unclear.
When asked about the duration of the blockage, mobile operator representatives stated that no timeline had been provided. This suggests that the platforms may remain inaccessible until further notice.
“Considering the ongoing situation, authorities have restricted the use of some applications through mobile internet. We are in constant communications with the authorities in this regard,” said a Grameenphone statement.
Efforts to reach officials from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for comment have so far been unsuccessful, as no one was available to respond to inquiries over the phone.
